Emerald seas, cobbled streets and verdant rainforest

Nestled within Brazil’s beautiful Costa Verde – a haven of forested mountains, untouched jungle and sandy bays – the colonial town of Paraty is waiting for its worthy admiration; with an idyllic setting making it one of the country’s most unique destinations. The historic Old Town is like a postcard of pedestrianized cobblestone streets, where a feeling of tranquility and timelessness is certainly in the air. As we wander through this carefully preserved center, stamped a National Historic Site by the government, we’ll come across all-white facades which look picture-perfect against their rainbow-colored doorways and window frames.

This beautiful scene is made even more special with the still waters of Baia Carioca on one side, and lush green hillsides on the other. We’ll encounter artisan shops selling authentic handicrafts, and fine dining restaurants serving lip-smacking Brazilian and international cuisine, taking in the romantic atmosphere of this pretty town as we go. Checking into ‘oldy-worldy’ hotels, where centuries of history have been conserved over time, will allow a further appreciation of Paraty’s colonial heritage, making for a fascinating base from which to explore regional gems like Serra da Bocaina National Park and the blissful beaches of Bahia de Paraty.
