From above, Brasília is shaped like an Eagle, made of concrete and steel, with the residential, industrial and commercial districts being separated along the lines of the ‘Eagle’s’ wingspan. On ground level, however, it is a little harder to get this particular sense of aerial perspective, though no less enjoyable to explore during a walking tour of the capital! Unlike the myriad streets of other Brazilian cities, this is every bit a ‘planned town’.
The brainchild of Oscar Niemeyer and Lucio Costa, Brasília was designed in the 1950s on what was then an empty plateau, with the intention of it becoming a near-perfect cityscape. So then, even better than judging their work from the air, this ‘under the skin’ guided tour will visit, among other highlights, the Metropolitan Cathedral, National Congress and leafy residential areas, before asking yourself the question; ‘how did they do it?’
